  • Soviet soldiers come ashore at Maiden's Point, Northumberland, concealing themselves as part of a plan to steal the Ultima Machine - a sophisticated military decipher device - located in a base nearby. (DW: The Curse of Fenric) Unknown to them, the British already knew of their intentions and intended to let them steal the machine as it contained a bomb of poisonous fluid/gas secreted underground in the area. The next day, the Doctor arrives and quickly becomes involved in a battle with his old foe Fenric, an ancient being that he imprisoned in a flask seventeen centuries earlier - the flask itself being buried in a local church by 10th century Vikings. Fenric activates the long-dormant Haemovores from the local bay and later their master, Ingiger, who it is revealed is from Earth's far future and is the last creature to be left alive before the polluted planet dies. After a conflict that sees the Soviet and British troops decimated, the Doctor is able to defeat his enemy, partly by persuading Ingiger to attack Fenric who, the Doctor reveals, caused the polluted nightmare of the future by forcing Ingiger to poison the planet with the fluid/gas that has been stockpiled at the base. Dr Judson, Rev Wainwright, Captain Sorin and the deranged Commodore Millington all lose their lives.
  • Ace's grandmother, Kathleen Dudman escapes from the base with her baby daughter, Audrey - Ace's mother. (DW: The Curse of Fenric).
