  • Donald Wilson, head of Serial Drama for the BBC, establishes the Monitoring Group, also known as the Survey Group, whose job is to keep the BBC informed about current trends in various genres of entertainment. In 1962, a report on science fiction progamming possibilities by this body leads to the creation of Doctor Who.

  • 09 - Coronation Street debuts on UK television. Still in production in 2009, it becomes the longest-running UK drama TV series of all time, and one of the only shows to surpass Doctor Who in longevity. Many Doctor Who cast members (before and after their involvement in Who) will appear on the series over the decades, and the series' popularity in the ratings is considered a contributing factor in the cancellation of Doctor Who in 1989, after it had been scheduled against the still-popular programme.
