1969 was a year in which a number of events important to the production of Doctor Who and its spin-offs occurred.
- 12 June - Final taping session for The War Games took place, marking the end of Patrick Troughton's regular involvement with the programme. It was also the last black and white taping session before the conversion to colour production.
- 13 September - Filming began on Spearhead from Space, the first story to feature Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor. This launched colour production for Doctor Who, although in a one-off occurrence, the entirety of Spearhead from Space was shot on film, rather than the standard film/videotape mix which resumed with the second Pertwee story, Doctor Who and the Silurians.
