The Andromeda Galaxy or "Constellation of Andromeda" was a galaxy near Mutter's Spiral, Earth's galaxy, meaning it was located within the Local Group.
[edit] History
Mavic Chen, Guardian of the Solar System, attended the Intergalactic Conference of Andromeda sometime prior to 4000. Planktus of the Outer Galaxies also attended. (DW: The Daleks' Master Plan)
Humans reached the Andromeda Galaxy by the time of Space Station Nerva's conversion into a space ark. (DW: The Ark in Space, The Sontaran Experiment) The Wirrn were native to Andromeda, though their breeding colonies were destroyed by Human colonists and, after a thousand years of fighting, they were driven from the Galaxy. They came to call Andromeda "the old lands". (DW: The Ark in Space) The Wirrn devastated the Phylox system. (EDA: Placebo Effect)
It was also the Galaxy where the Cult of Shining Darkness tried to destroy all robots. (NSA: Shining Darkness)
Beings known as the Three Sleepers originated from Andromeda. Having stolen data from the Matrix on Gallifrey, the Sleepers took refuge on Earth in the far future, circa 2,000,000 CE. In retribution for this, the Time Lords used the Magnetron to devastate the planet by fire, moving it two light years to cover up the leak. Owing to the move a rescue ship sent from Andromeda to recover the Sleepers and the data missed Earth and caused the Sleepers to die in suspended animation. (DW: The Trial of a Time Lord: The Mysterious Planet)
A hundred million years after Humans visited the Andromeda Galaxy, the Doctor's TARDIS landed in a planetoid-sized ship and an armada of smaller ships, traveling slower than the speed of light headed for Mutter's Spiral in order to conquer it. The ship contained the One, made up of millions of Andromedan minds, life forms from the Andromeda Galaxy and Aalas, the android servants of the One. (Doctor Who and the Invasion from Space)
[edit] Other information
- The city of Castrovalva, a Block Transfer Computation structure created by the Master as a trap for the Fifth Doctor, was located on a lush green world in the Phylox system. (DW: Castrovalva)
- At some point, there were high tensions between the organic and mechanical lifeforms in the Andromeda Galaxy, illustrated by the rise of the Cult of Shining Darkness. Andromeda is home to Near-Humans as well as several nonhumanoid forms. The Doctor considers his knowledge of Andromeda to be spotty. (NSA: Shining Darkness)
[edit] Behind the Scenes
- Dialogue in The Mysterious Planet confusingly mentions the "constellation of Andromeda", which in real world astronomical terms makes no sense whatsoever. This entry assumes that this means the Andromeda Galaxy.
- According to background information given in FASA's The Doctor Who Role Playing Game, the android Movellans originated in Andromeda before being expelled from that galaxy by a coalition of races known as the Organic League.
