Starting her acting career early in the 1950s, Shelley first came to fame for appearing in the 1958 horror films The Camp on Blood Island and Blood of the Vampire. In the 1960s, she became Hammer's number 1 female star, appearing in The Gorgon, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Rasputin the Mad Monk and Quartermass and the Pit.
Other notable appearances include the guest lead in the first Danger Man episode in 1960, as well as playing the female lead in the 1960 film Village of the Damned. Her other television credits included The Invisible Man, The Saint, No Hiding Place, The Human Jungle, The Avengers, Paul Temple, Z-Cars, Dixon of Dock Green, Crown Court, Blake's 7, Bergerac and Eastenders. She also appeared as Elaine Smythe in twelve of the thirteen episodes of Oil Strike North.
