CE is an abbreviation for Common Era and is a secular replacement for the Christian dating system of Before Christ and Anno Domini. The year 2009 CE, for example, translates to the Christian dating 2009 AD. Dates from before the Common Era have the designation BCE, or "Before Common Era".
