[edit] Categories

This is a true mess. I don't know if you've noticed, but somehow two separate branches, leading to exactly the same place, have developed in the category tree. It appears as though originally people had the notion that Real World would lead to further categories taking care of the cast, crew, and other things clearly not in universe. But then someone came along and made categories for Doctor Who cast, crew, writers, prose writers, and television writers outside the Real World category. So now we have duplicate categories (and I'm not even sure how "television writers' differs from "writers").

I would normally be happy to try to fix something like this, but, ultimately, only admin can delete categories, which is what will be required. I suppose the main reason for that is that admins are meant to lay the basic foundations for the wiki. So I leave it to admins to figure out just how they want the basic structure of the category tree to go. Do we keep the subcats of Doctor Who strictly limited to Real World and In-universe, with everything flowing from those? While elegant, it's possible that having things so simple will ultimately lead to new "top level" cats being created. Still, a well-worded note atop the Doctor Who category, explaining the structure, may work wonders. Right now, it's awfully unclear to the novice how new categories should be added, or where people should look for the category they're trying to find.

The other alternative is to give in to the process that appears to have been started. Bypass Real World and In-universe altogether, and have everything on the Doctor Who page.

Either way, most of the cats currently on the Doctor Who page are going to have to be consolidated, and whichever cats are left empty will need to be deleted. CzechOut | 12:06, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

I've begun this, I've thinned / sorted out the top level Doctor Who category, it's down to the basics. Anything that you sort out that needs a delete chuck a prop delete on it and I or one of the other admins will look in on it and delete it. Thanks for making us aware of the overly complex nature of the categories (I recall someone mentioning it a while ago and I never got around to fixing it), but will endeavor to work on it. --Tangerineduel 15:03, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
