King Charles IX was ruler of France from 1560 to 1574, and the son of Catherine de Medici. Initially tolerant of the Hugenots, he was angered by the failed assassination attempt on Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, and under his mother's influence, he authorized the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
