Professor Charles Kettering was a scientist and the Master's assistant on the Keller Machine. He demonstrated its first use in Stangmoor Prison to the press, among whom was James Stevens. The Third Doctor continuously interrupted Kettering during his elucidation about the Keller process. After Barnham, the one hundredth and thirteenth person to undergo the process, had an odd reaction, the Doctor claimed that the Keller machine was a new and unusual menace to mankind. (TV: The Mind of Evil, PROSE: Who Killed Kennedy)

Kettering refused to listen to the Doctor's warnings about the machine's dangers, and it was while checking over the machine, shortly after the mysterious death of observer Arthur Linwood, that it killed him by turning his fear of drowning against him. His fear was so great that water manifested in his lungs. (TV: The Mind of Evil)
