Charlie Fisher

From TARDIS Index File, the free Doctor Who reference.

Charlie Fisher was a young pickpocket in London. In 1863, he attempted to steal from the Doctor, but was captured. When the Doctor was also arrested for counterfeiting money (when he accidentally produced a 1970s bank-note), he and Charlie escaped to the TARDIS. Offering to give Charlie a new life, the Doctor took him to the United States, where they landed in Gettysburg during the American Civil War. They were captured by Union soldiers who believed them to be Confederate spies and were sentenced to be executed. To prove their innocence, the Doctor and Charlie escaped and used a hot air balloon to help sketch a map of the Confederate lines. The balloon was shot down by rebel soldiers, but the Doctor and Charlie used a train engine to escape, and got the map to President Abraham Lincoln, who gave it to General Grant. The information helped aid the Union Army to win the Battle of Gettysburg. Afterwards, Charlie helped the Doctor get his TARDIS back, despite interference from George and Asa Bamford, and the Doctor dropped off Charlie in Australia, where he hoped to become rich by getting gold in Ballarat.
