The Companions of Doctor Who was a series published by Target Books in the mid-1980s featuring the Doctor's companions after they had stopped travelling with the Doctor.
The first release in the series was Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma, focusing on Vislor Turlough after he left the Doctor, which was followed by Harry Sullivan's War, featuring the adventures of Harry Sullivan. A third and final release, K-9 and Company, was a novelisation of A Girl's Best Friend, the pilot episode of the aborted K-9 and Company spin-off series.
Further books were planned, but not published.
Companions of Doctor Who is notable for including the first original full-length novels set in the Doctor Who universe (previously only short stories and a novella or two had been published, novels being reserved for novelisations only). The Turlough volume stands as the longest novel published under the standard Target Books format which was in use from 1973-1991 (a few later releases in the Virgin Missing Adventures format were longer). Harry Sullivan's War is also unique in that it was written by Ian Marter, the actor-turned-writer who portrayed Sullivan on television.
