Dave Young was Anji Kapoor's boyfriend for five years just before she became a companion of the Eighth Doctor.

Dave was an actor who had never quite broken through to a memorable guest-starring or regular role. In the late 1980s, he played a Cybertron in one of the final episodes of the long-running science fiction series Professor X. (PROSE: Escape Velocity)

Dave spent most of his days sat in front of the television and occasionally flipping through "help wanted" adverts. He would wait for Anji to come home and go out to get pizza for them both. Another day Dave had auditioned for an acting role and was given it on the spot. He opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate, and drank it within ten minutes. (PROSE: EarthWorld)

A science fiction fan, he was predisposed to accept the life led by the Eighth Doctor and Fitz Kreiner when he and Anji met them in Brussels in early February 2001. Ironically, he was killed by the first alien invasion he witnessed, and his girlfriend joined the Doctor.

Their relationship began to sour on New Year's Eve 1999 when he spent the entire night arguing with her that the start of the millennium was not until 1 January 2001. The extreme geekiness displayed by this argument made her wonder if their relationship had already slipped into an irremediable ennui. On New Year's Eve 2001, having suffered an entire year of pedantry, boredom and petty fights, Kapoor got Dave to agree to a year of doing unexpected, spontaneous things. One of the first of these was a February 2001 trip to Brussels, Belgium, where they met the Eighth Doctor and Fitz Kreiner. Although the Doctor promised that he would be able to save Dave from the Kulan attack on Earth, Dave died at their hands. (PROSE: Escape Velocity)

After his death, while Anji was travelling onboard the Doctor's TARDIS, she wrote unsent e-mails to him as a way of keeping a sort of diary and maintaining a connection to him. (PROSE: EarthWorld)

Significantly later in her travels with the Doctor, Anji began to feel guilty about having gotten used to being without Dave for so long. Awash with nostalgia, she had a clone of him made on a planet far away from Earth. This clone, however, was merely a genetic copy and didn't share the original's history, emotions, or experiences. (PROSE: Hope)

Known traits[]

Dave had a lot in common with the Eighth Doctor's companion Izzy Sinclair. He was a science fiction fan (PROSE: Escape Velocity) and enough of a comics geek to have a particular night (Thursday) routinely set aside for the exploration of his collection. (PROSE: Hope)
