Wonders was the fifth and final instalment in the Virgin Decalogs short story anthology series, which initially began as a compilation of Doctor Who-related stories. By the time this fifth volume was released, Virgin Books no longer had the rights to publish original Doctor Who fiction. Nine of its ten stories were entirely original science fiction, with no connection to the Doctor Who universe.
However, it was important to the history of DWU fiction for the one story that did have some relevance to Doctor Who. The Judgement of Solomon by Lawrence Miles was the first short story to feature former companion Bernice Summerfield.
