Digby Latimer was the son of Captain Latimer and brother of Francesca Latimer, whom he called "Frannie". The children and their father lived in London. Digby watched his governess, "Miss Montague", die in the last seconds of Christmas Eve, 1892, from massive internal injuries stemming from a fall from cloud level. Digby's prior governess died approximately a year earlier from drowning. His mother died some time earlier. He disliked their governess prior to Clara, stating that she was "always cross".
