• This novelisation is based on the original television serial (TV): The Keeper of Traken, written by Johnny Byrne and shown from 31 January 1981.
• The cover and information on the right are for the original Target edition. It features the artwork of Andrew Skilleter. (See below for information on editions with different covers).
• The original cover art has the distinction of being one of the first to showcase a companion without the Doctor, in this case Nyssa.
