20th century

In 1906, the Dreadnought was launched by the Royal Navy, sparking an arms race between the United Kingdom and Imperial Germany. In the longer term, this lead to the development much more powerful weapons throughout the rest of the 20th century. In 1913, news reached England that Captain Robert Scott had died shortly after completing his journey from Cardiff to Antarctica. (AUDIO: The Fog)

In 1918, the first thirteen days of February were skipped by Russia as the country moved from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar: 31 January was immediately followed by 14 February. In 1936, the Japanese First Infantry Division launched a revolt in Tokyo, killing many government officials and civil servants. The revolt was ultimately put down by imperial decree, but influenced changes to government policy, primarily related to Japanese intentions towards China. In 1941, as the Blitz was ongoing, the Luftwaffe moved its attention away from London in favour of other English cities. While this offered the capital some respite, Winston Churchill lamented that it did not alleviate Britain's collective suffering. The testing phase of the Nazis' Hartung Project concluded on 28 February, though it ran into complications after Emil Hartung died in a crash at midnight. In 1945, the RAF and USAF launched an airborne attack on the German city of Dresden, setting the place ablaze with incendiary bombs.
