The Sky Below was a comic story published in Doctor Who: Battles in Time. It was written by Steve Cook.

Opening narration box[]

When the strange planet swallowed the TARDIS the Doctor had no choice but to follow...

Summary[]

The Doctor now knows the planet is alive. He takes an anti-gravity pack from one of the many wrecked spacecraft on the surface and descends a blowhole in the planet's skin-like crust to find the TARDIS.

At the end of his drop is an ocean of plasma, the planet's bloodstream. He finds an island made of debris and the TARDIS. He also finds the scavenging descendants of a race fleeing from stellar catastrophe in a Gamma Class VII Life Ark.

The Doctor avoids attack from the planet's defences. He uses spare fuel cells from his anti-gravity pack. He lodges the anti-gravity pack in one of the defence creatures' mouth and sends it to the planet's surface. He encourages the survivors to climb the ridges of the creatures body. They will adapt to a new life on the surface. The Doctor slides down to retrieve the TARDIS. It has been taken even deeper into the planet...

Notes[]

  • Supporting the series of collectible Doctor Who trading cards, the magazine carried a regular four page, individually titled comic strip of the Tenth Doctor's adventures.
  • The artwork and colours were bold and bright, reflecting the tone of the magazine and, as did Doctor Who Adventures, reflected the appeal to readers younger than those catered to by Doctor Who Magazine.
  • The Battles in Time comic strip sought to associate its Doctor with the one seen on screen with "props" from the TV series: blue/brown suit, intelligent-looking glasses, sonic screwdriver and psychic paper.
