Kathleen Dudman, Ace's maternal grandmother, worked as a radio operator at the British Army base at Maiden's Point in 1943.

Biography[]

Kathleen was the widowed mother of Audrey. Her husband, Frank Dudman, was killed during World War II. She hid her baby on the base because she couldn't find anyone to look after her. After Commander A. H. Millington discovered the baby in 1943, he fired Kathleen. Ace, not knowing her identity, struck up a friendship with her and became protective of her. When the troops were mysteriously collecting and confiscating chess sets, Kathleen hid hers. She escaped the attack on the base by the Haemovores. Evacuating in a military vehicle, she was given an address by Ace to which to relocate. (TV: The Curse of Fenric)

In 1963, Audrey went by "Alex" in order to spite her mother, who disapproved of her using a "boys' name". (AUDIO: The Shoreditch Intervention)

Death[]

According to one account, Kathleen died in 1973, when Ace was only three-years-old. Audrey cried for days afterwards. (AUDIO: Night Thoughts)

According to another account, Kathleen died in a care home when Ace was a young adult. Ace would visit Kathleen every Tuesday until the day she died, with Ace believing that Kathleen recognised her from their meeting in 1943 before she passed, as her eyes "sparkled" and she "smiled like she'd never smiled before". (TV: The Curse of Fenric)
