Essex was an English county. One of the local newspapers was the Colchester Evening News. The Colchester Knights played football there. (TV: Closing Time)

Essex was located in the south-east of England, to the north-east of London. West of Essex was Oxford and to the north-west was Cambridge. (TV: Spyfall) Locations in Essex included Epping, (TV: Spearhead from Space) Colchester, (TV: Closing Time) Purfleet, (TV: Nightvisiting) Basildon, Brentwood, Chelmsford and Maldon. (TV: Spyfall)

Ancient history to 20th century[]

A ship full of Cybermen crashed in what would become the Essex town of Colchester, and remained buried and hidden for centuries. (TV: Closing Time)

The Twelfth Doctor hangs out in 1138 Essex. (TV: The Doctor's Meditation)

After encountering a young Davros during the Thousand Year War, the Twelfth Doctor travelled to 1138 Essex to mediate but ended up partying for weeks instead. (TV: The Doctor's Meditation, The Magician's Apprentice)

Oxley Woods was located in the Essex town of Epping. In 1970, a formation of Nestene spheres landed in the wood. At the same time, the TARDIS materialised there, carrying the newly-regenerated Third Doctor. He was taken to Ashbridge Cottage Hospital by the UNIT troops who found him whilst searching for the the spheres. (TV: Spearhead from Space)

Craig Owens and the Eleventh Doctor in 2010 Essex. (TV: The Lodger)

At some point, a sentient ship (TV: The Lodger) once owned by the The Silence (TV: Day of the Moon) hid a atop a house at 79B Aickman Road, Colchester, by simulating another storey via a perception filter. In 2010, the Eleventh Doctor rented a spare room from Craig Owens at 79A Aickman Road after the ship lured and killed seventeen people in its the search for a compatible pilot. The Doctor, Craig, and Sophie stopped the ship and deactivated the perception filter. (TV: The Lodger)

By 2011, the Sanderson & Grainger department store had unknowingly been built atop the still-buried cyber-ship. In 2011, the ship and its Cybermen passengers began to reactivate, a Cybermat routing electricity to it. During this time, several people disappeared from the area. While visiting Craig, the Eleventh Doctor took a job in Sanderson & Grainger's toy department to investigate the disappearances. He and Craig found and destroyed the Cybership. (TV: Closing Time)
