Pursuant to T:DWIA, a purge of all images from the Doctor Who Image Archive has today been completed. This amounted to only about 100 remaining images, but a few pages were disproportionately affected. The following pages, and the character pages that flow therefrom, now desperately need editor attention:
- The Daleks (TV story)
- The Edge of Destruction (TV story)
- The Romans (TV story) - check character pages particularly
- The War Games (TV story) — well, part 10 to be precise. We're now missing pics of the Time Lords at the end.
- Spearhead from Space (TV story)
- The Curse of Peladon (TV story) - character pages particularly
- The Time Warrior (TV story)
- The Ark in Space (TV story)
- The Sontaran Experiment (TV story)
- Revenge of the Cybermen (TV story)
- The Brain of Morbius (TV story)
- The Talons of Weng-Chiang (TV story) - character pages particularly (Henry Gordon Jago and Litefoot affected)
- Almost all of Key to Time story pages are missing a single picture.
- City of Death (TV story) - check character pages
- Logopolis (TV story)
- Castrovalva (TV story) - several pics now gone, but we'll need a new pic of the TARDIS information system screen in particular
- Timelash (TV story)
- Remembrance of the Daleks (TV story)
- Doctor Who logo
A few other pages have had pictures wrenched from them, but no other pages have been left substantially denuded of illustration.
Other stragglers[]
There are a number of other files which had the DWIA copyright tag. Some of these were undoubtedly mis-licensed. The DWIA is generally a place our editors went for old series pics, and a lot of these are from the new series. Most of them weren't being used anywhere. But a few, notably the ones that are publicity shots of actors, probably did derive from DWIA. In any case, they're all deleted now. But I include the following list as a sort of guide to what might need to be replace. Bear in mind, though, that a lot of these were images that weren't actually posted to pages.

Why do this?[]
You might wonder why it was necessary to de-illustrate so many of the classic series pages. Well, "necessary" is a strong word, but it was certainly expedient. Beyond the fact that these images came from a source we've slowly been marginalising over the years, most of the pictures just weren't that good. Almost all of them violated our basic image guidelines. Namely, they were almost all of a non-widescreen aspect ratio, when it's easily possible to obtain such a ratio. Moreover, they all came from VHS sources at best. Now that the DVD range is nearly complete — and indeed all the stories mentioned above have been released to DVD — there's no reason to keep these relatively grainy DWIA images around.
How you can help[]
Just pick one of the above stories from your DVD collection, rewatch it, and take snapshots along the way. Then, upload the pics and replace the deleted images. Please don't use the same filename that was there before. DWIA filenames were logical for that website, but make no sense on ours. Choose a properly descriptive filename instead. Thanks!

Question[]
This may be a stupid question, but how do you take snapshots? I'm thinking you don't mean take a picture of your tv screen while watching the video, so just how is this done? Thanks! Shambala108 talk to me 18:29, May 31, 2012 (UTC)
- Not a stupid question at all. There are many ways to get a screenshot. You can push the PrntScrn button on your Windows based machine, or Shift-Command-3 on your OSX machine, and then crop the resulting image. Or you can use whatever command your playback software allows.
- Personally, I think the easiest method is to use VLC as your primary playback software (available at http://www.videolan.org/index.html) and then follow these simple instructions. VLC is available on all platforms, it opens everything, and it has superior audio fidelity to any playback software I've ever used. If you've not been using VLC, you've been missing out. (That would be an advertisement, 'cept that VLC is free.)

- I dunno, Tybort. I don't have a Windows machine to check on anymore, but it definitely used to be — and VLC themselves are saying in their FAQ that it still is — Ctrl-Alt-S. Certainly, as of version 2.0.2, the current Mac default is as it has been since version 0: Command-Alt-S. This suggests they're still using Ctrl on the Windows side. Maybe you've inadvertently changed your own defaults and forgot that you did it? The page at the VideoLAN wiki referred to above was written only in December, so if there have been changes, maybe they are super-recent. It seems weird, though, that VideoLAN would have made the version 2.0.2 Windows and Mac keys "asymmetrical", as it were.

- In any case, users can double-check the hotkey by going to Preferences | Interface | Hotkeys on a Windows machine. Once there, check Advanced options and look for the keys next to Take video snapshot. (Mac users have a more straightforward path: just go to Preferences | Hotkeys and look for Take video snapshot.)
