Gabriel Gayle was a neighbour of Lloyd Collins. He repeatedly beat Lloyd at games of chess. While walking past the Collins' house, he told Lloyd's daughter Jess that Lloyd owed him a game of chess, and he might let Lloyd win this time. (COMIC: Moving In)

On Christmas Day 1972, Mr Gayle, along with the rest of the Collins family's street, was invited to the Collins family's house for breakfast by Devina Collins as a reminder that they were a community and to remember Carmen, who had died over Christmas 1971. (COMIC: Be Forgot)

In 1973, Gayle's chess game with the Twelfth Doctor was interrupted by the Doctor's TARDIS nearly finishing its self-repair, and later Jess telling the Doctor about a visitor asking for him. Gayle was shrunk and murdered by the Master after they played a chess game in the garden. (COMIC: Doorway to Hell)
