The Golden Gate Park Panhandle, often called simply the Panhandle, was a strip of public parkland in San Francisco connected to the Golden Gate Park. Jessica Willamy said that the Haight-Ashbury district "straddled" it, and that "barely a day went by without some protest rally or a local band playing a free concert in the Panhandle". In and around 1967, Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, the Quicksilver Messenger Service, Santana, and Janis Joplin were known to have played the Panhandle.
Jess told Ben and Polly that she could see the Panhandle from her pad on Oak Street. She went on to say that the Diggers often gave out free food in the Panhandle, as they did in the Golden Gate Park "proper". (PROSE: Wonderland)
