Greece

Greece, also known as the Hellenic Republic, (TV: Children of Earth: Day Three) was a country in southern Europe, on Earth. Aliens frequently became involved in its history. Major Greek cities included Athens (eventually its capital city), Sparta and Delphi.

Greece had access to Mediterranean Sea (PROSE: The Stone House) and shared a border with Bulgaria. (PROSE: The Touch of the Nurazh)

The First Doctor once theorised that Atlantean colonists had settled in Ancient Greece following the destruction of Atlantis, explaining why they worshipped the same gods. (PROSE: The Lost Ones)

In ancient times, the Immortals were worshipped as gods by the Greeks. (PROSE: Deadly Reunion) Greek civilisation was also influenced by both the Dæmons (TV: The Dæmons) and Scaroth. (TV: City of Death)

Ancient history[]

The Doctor claimed to have met the legendary Greek hero Theseus. (TV: The Creature from the Pit, The Horns of Nimon)

The Tenth Doctor and June visited Greece in 1500 BC, where they stopped the Slitheen from exploiting the local humans. (PROSE: The Slitheen Excursion)

Circa 1200 BC, the Greeks participated in the Trojan War. This was when the first incarnation of the Doctor met Katarina. (TV: The Myth Makers) The First Doctor and his companions Susan Foreman, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright also met Alexander the Great in Babylon in May 323 BC. (AUDIO: Farewell, Great Macedon) The Doctor also claimed to have met Pyrrho. (TV: The Keys of Marinus)

The Doctor claimed to have visited the very first Olympic Games and watched naked men throwing a discus before a giant crowd. (TV: Fear Her)

The Greek philosopher Bigon was abducted by the Urbankans. (TV: Four to Doomsday)

One of the ships used by the Eternals in their contest for Enlightenment resembled a Greek trireme and was crewed by Greek sailors. (TV: Enlightenment)

19th century[]

In 1824, Lord Byron died of a fever in Greece. (PROSE: Managra)

In the 1890s, Fowler and Aubrey ended up in Greece, after a mysterious fog transported them to an isolated island when they were three days out from Port Said. (AUDIO: Return of the Nightmare)

20th century[]

Greece was involved in World War I. (PROSE: Just War)

In April 1941, Greece was invaded by the forces of Nazi Germany as World War II spread into Eastern Europe. The British fought against the Germans there. On 19 April, the Germans outflanked the British on the Pindus Mountains and forced them to withdraw. On 23 April, the British Army began to evacuate Greece. (PROSE: Just War) The Germans subsequently took control of the Greek islands. (PROSE: Deadly Reunion) Under occupation, partisan groups laid many secret paths allowing travel around Greece and into Bulgaria. (PROSE: The Touch of the Nurazh)

After the war, a communist insurrection broke out in the north of Greece. His Majesty's Intelligence Corps began exploring the islands to update their maps which had become outdated since the evacuation, but the British government decided against intervention on the mainland. (PROSE: Deadly Reunion)

21st century[]

While on holiday in Greece in the 21st century, June met the Tenth Doctor and helped him defeat a group of aliens who posed a threat to Athens. (PROSE: The Slitheen Excursion)

In 2009, Greece, otherwise known as the Hellenic Republic, was among the nations which agreed to let John Frobisher speak on their behalf to the 456. (TV: Children of Earth: Day Three)

In 2011, Greece declared itself bankrupt during the Miracle, as did Ireland. (TV: End of the Road)

In 2016, Syrian refugees were transported from Turkey to Greece by the sea. (PROSE: The Stone House)

Parallel universes[]

In the first parallel universe that Rose Tyler visited while trying to find her way back to N-Space, the Ancient Greeks believed the sudden disappearance of stars from the sky, victims of the reality bomb, to be Hermes stealing them as gifts for Aphrodite. (AUDIO: The Endless Night)
