Captain Sam Hawkins was a UNIT officer who served under Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. He was engaged to Corporal Maisy Hawke, when he fought Silurians at Wenley Moor and was killed by one of them. He attempted to kill the Silurians when they invaded Wenley Moor nuclear research facility. He took a strategic position from behind the doorway of a makeshift medical laboratory where the Doctor had devised a cure for the Silurian virus. He opened fire on four Silurians, one of them taking hold of the Doctor as a living shield. Though the Doctor shouted at Hawkins to stop, it was too late for him to escape.
