Hutchinson was a school bully in 1913 and best friend of Jeremy Baines. He frequently tormented Tim Latimer and forced the younger student to do his homework for him. He made racist remarks to Martha Jones, who was working as a maid at his school. He was particularly quick to call Tim a coward during military drills and the real-life conflict with the scarecrows. He and Tim joined the British Army in World War I, serving on the Western Front. Tim eventually passed Hutchinson in rank and saved his life on the battlefield.
