Controller Jarvis Bennett was the commander of the Wheel.

Biography[]

Jarvis Bennett was, by 2000, (TV: The Mind Robber; AUDIO: Prison in Space) 2079 (AUDIO: The Dying Light) or later, (PROSE: The Indestructible Man) the controller of the Wheel. He was angry when he first learnt of Bill Duggan's greenhouse in the power room, but Gemma Corwyn convinced him to let Duggan keep it for therapeutic reasons.

Jarvis identified Silver Carrier when it first came to the Wheel's attention and was concerned of the risk it posed, paying no attention to Dr Corwyn until Jamie McCrimmon made his and the Second Doctor's presence aboard known. He believed that the two were Pull Back to Earth types after Jamie sabotaged the x-ray laser and confined Duggan to his rooms after a Cybermat killed Kemel Rudkin. Despite these occurrences, he believed that Dr Corwyn was being alarmist and provoking hysteria when she expressed her worries.

When told by the Doctor about the Cybermen, Jarvis disbelieved him, refusing to believe that anything could infiltrate the Wheel, and unwittingly allowed the Cybermen to be brought aboard from Silver Carrier in a box of bernalium. He released Duggan and the Doctor from their confinement and ignored any mention of the rocket or Cybermats, entering an almost catatonic state and forcing Dr Corwyn to take command. He returned to lucidity after Dr Corwyn died and was killed trying to fight a Cyberman. (TV: The Wheel in Space)

Personality[]

Jarvis was an authoritative man (PROSE: The Wheel in Space) who was well-suited to running the Wheel in ordinary circumstances. However, he, in Dr Corwyn's words, was unable to accept phenomena outside the laws of physics and completely blocked off his mind when confronted with a problem for which he had no solution, only accepting the presence of the Cybermen with his friend's death. (TV: The Wheel in Space)

Appearance[]

Jarvis was a bald, stocky man with a beard. He was visibly older than Leo Ryan. (PROSE: The Wheel in Space)
