John Aubrey
John Aubrey (12 March 1626-June 1697) was an English antiquary and writer, best known as the author of the collection of short biographical pieces usually referred to as Brief Lives. In 1649 he published his study of the megalithic stones at Avebury and began developing his theories about the ancient Druids. Having attended one of his parties and noting he has "a great sense of humour," the Doctor was of the opinion that Aubrey made up Druidism as a joke. (DW: The Stones of Blood)
