John Bennett's career as a 1st assistant director on Doctor Who began with Planet of the Dead. He was credited during the early part of the fifth series, on The Eleventh Hour, The Vampires of Venice and Vincent and the Doctor.
Bennett has been an assistant director — usually a first — since at least the early 2000s. One of his earliest gigs as a 1st AD was on Chris Chibnall's Born and Bred, where he worked with future Doctor Who colleagues make-up designer Barbara Southcott and costume designer Ray Holman, along with Doctor Who alumnus, producer Chris Clough. In 2004, he was first assistant to director Geoffrey Sax on Margery and Gladys.
