a real world point of view
John Horton was the visual effects designer for several stories in the Third and Fourth Doctors' eras, including: Spearhead from Space, The Claws of Axos, The Mutants, Carnival of Monsters, Terror of the Zygons, The Brain of Morbius, The Armageddon Factor and Logopolis. In his time on Doctor Who, he was credited in a variety of ways, and was one of the few people during the original series to be called a "special effects designer" — which has ultimately proven to be the more correct name for his work.
Outside Doctor Who he worked on many of the seminal British programmes of his day, including: The Goodies, Monty Python's Flying Circus, It Ain't Half Hot Mum and Are You Being Served? and Ripping Yarns.
