Kate was a teacher at Coed y Garreg Primary School in Cardiff. Jasmine Pierce was one of her students and she showed concern for her when no one came to pick her up after school one day. When two girls were attacked by a fierce gale, Kate ran to protect them, forcing the responsible party to cease their assault because Kate had been kind to Jasmine. Kate, somewhat traumatised by the events, called the school to an early close and was interviewed by members of Torchwood, during which she noted that of all the children in the playground at the time, Jasmine had remained calm and almost amused while her terrified peers fled nor was she affected by the wind.
