Inspector Lestrade was a detective of Scotland Yard. He came from the old school that was more concerned with making an arrest than amassing evidence.
In 1885, he unsuccessfully dragged a lake looking for Hatty Doran's body. Dr. John Watson's notes on the case were later written as a story by Arthur Conan Doyle and published in The Strand. In 1887, the Seventh Doctor saw him drinking in the Tank. (PROSE: All-Consuming Fire)
In 1897, he took credit for the apprehension of Professor Janus after receiving great assistance from the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler. He wanted to pass their names on to Queen Victoria, but the Doctor convinced him to cover up their involvement. (COMIC: Bat Attack!)

- Inspector Lestrade is best known as a supporting character in Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, but also exists as a real person in the Doctor Who universe.
- In-story dating of The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor places the murder of Hatty Doran in 1887 or 1888.
- Rupert Graves played Inspector Lestrade in Sherlock, a modern-day adaptation of Sherlock Holmes created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. He was also played by Frank Finlay in A Study in Terror and Murder by Decree, Colin Jeavons in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, William Lucas in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, Simon Callow in The Crucifer of Blood, Sean Pertwee in Elementary, and John Banks in Big Finish's Sherlock Holmes series.
