Lord of Misrule

The Lord of Misrule was a role taken by an individual who proceeded over the revelries of a feast day. In 1400, at Sonning Palace's Epiphany feast, the First Doctor assumed the role of Lord of Misrule. He appeared to draw a Spanish orange from the ear of the bishop and a model fish burst open to reveal many more such fruits. The former queen, Isabella, took him for a magician. When Archbishop Arundel arrived, he mockingly remarked that the Doctor was a fitting Lord of Misrule. (AUDIO: The Doctor's Tale)

It was also one of the titles traditionally given to the Devil in medieval lore, alongside Prince of Darkness. (PROSE: Deadly Reunion)
