Macbeth was a play, as well as the name of the titular regicidal thane, created by William Shakespeare.
While it was an established fact that Shakespeare had embellished history for the sake of drama, much of the play appeared to be accurate. The play, was in essence, the retelling of an adventure of the Second Doctor, where he and his companions, Jamie and Zoe, accidentally became embroiled in the events of the play, taking on the roles of the witches, the murderers and Lady Macbeth's physician. At the end of this draft, the Doctor would make sure Shakespeare wrote the play correctly upon their next meeting. However, the play was later edited, possibly by Thomas Middleton, presumably for plausibility. (PROSE: The True Tragedy of Macbeth)
Robert Dodds believed his role as Banquo in the play to be his greatest triumph; most thought he was a poor actor. He was killed by Pamela whilst reciting his lines from the play. Two plaques with speeches from the play adorned Dodds' home, Banquo Manor. (PROSE: The Banquo Legacy)
The Twelfth Doctor once quoted the play by telling Clara and Jagganth Daiki-Nagata: "To die, to die. Glamis hath murdered sleep, therefore Cawdor shall sleep no more. Macbeth shall sleep no more." (TV: Sleep No More)
