Mark Tonderai directed the Doctor Who television stories The Ghost Monument and Rosa.

He is the first black director on Doctor Who (although not the first person of colour to direct, in fact, the very first story, An Unearthly Child, was directed by Waris Hussein). He was also credited as a B camera operator on both episodes.

In January 2018, Tonderai directed both episodes in his production block in South Africa. He worked with Out of Africa Entertainment, a local production company, as well as the regular Doctor Who crew.

Tonderai was born in London but raised in Zimbabwe. He graduated with a degree in architecture from Kingston University and UNC Charlotte. He later came to work for BBC Radio, even hosting his own series, the Mark Tonderai Show. Soon, Tonderai turned to writing and directing for film and television.
