In the early hours of Christmas Day 1902, Newbury was paid a visit by three spirits that each took of the form of a friend old and new that gave him glimpses into the past, present and future. The spirit that took on the form of his former assistant Templeton Black encouraged him to forgive himself for Black's death, the spirit that took on the form of his friend Charles Bainbridge challenged his current opium addition, and the spirit that took on the form of Veronica Hobbes warned him of impending danger.
