Neil Cross (born Neil Gadd in Bristol) wrote the Doctor Who television stories The Rings of Akhaten and Hide. A long-time fan, Cross recalled in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine [which?] [source needed] how writing for the series had allowed him to finally impress his sister:

She's never been impressed with anything I've ever done. Got a degree: "Meh." Got my first decent job: "Meh." Published my first decent book, which was the dream of my life: "Meh." Wrote my first thing for the screen: "I like the first one, not sure about the second one." Got my own show: "God, he's handsome, isn't he, that Idris Elba." Then one day I phoned my sister and said I was writing Doctor Who and she cried."Neil Cross [source needed]
