A run was the basic unit of scoring in cricket — comparable to goals in football and other units in other sports. Runs could be scored in a variety of ways. It was known, for instance, that a ball which was hit over the boundary rope earned the batsman either four or six runs.
In the 2010 match between the Doctor's Invitation Eleven and the Cheldon Bonniface Invitation Eleven, Jason Kane once scored four runs in this manner because his ball bounced first before crossing the boundary. On the other hand, Ishtar Hutchings would have received six runs because the ball appeared on course to cross the boundary without touching the ground — but Sanki caught it first.
