Sanders was commander of the expedition to assess Deva Loka's suitability for colonisation. He was referred to by the Kinda as "the old red-faced one who shouts".
Sanders and the expedition used a dome as their base on the planet's surface. Originally a party of six, the expeditionary force was reduced to three after those who left the dome — including one named Roberts — did not return. Sanders went out to explore in the Total Survival Suit. He met Karuna who gave him the box of Jhana. The shock made him mentally unstable for a short while. In this time he returned to the dome and attempted to calm Hindle down. He helped Hindle create a model city and paper people to inhabit it. The box restored Hindle's sanity and Sanders also recovered. (TV: Kinda)
