a real world point of view

Sound maintenance engineers, in television (and film) production teams, have a broader job than a boom operator, though those in the position have often acted as a boom operator. They are responsible for managing and maintaining various elements of the sound equipment used in the course of television and film production. [1]

The role of Sound Maintenance Engineer was first credited in Series 5 the 2005 series of Doctor Who produced by BBC Wales.
