There are Fairies at the Bottom of the Garden was the ninth short story in the Short Trips anthology Short Trips. It was written by Sam Lester. It featured the First Doctor and Dodo Chaplet.

Summary Edit

Dodo and the Doctor land on a planet that seems to be in an advanced state of decay. It smells bad, it oozes, and it looks rotten. The Doctor tries to get her interested in her surroundings, but she can't understand why he has come here. They encounter a creature that is somehow singing a mournful song, even though it has no mouth. The Doctor does something to the creature that seems to heal it, and it heads off down the path. Dodo and the Doctor follow, and the Doctor leaves Dodo behind.

She continues until she arrives at a beautiful crystal garden. Everything, including the ground, is made of crystal. Dodo even sees tiny fairies hovering around a large, beautiful, unfolding crystal flower in the centre of the garden. She understands now why the Doctor thinks the place is beautiful. She sees the creature she followed here, and it seems to die, with a fairy coming out of it. Then, to her horror, the Doctor appears and smashes the crystal flower with his cane. He takes Dodo to the TARDIS, and shows her that the place where they had landed was a giant flower, and the crystal was a parasite that was killing the flower.
