Tugthuis was the House of Correction in Amsterdam on Heiligeway.

Tugthuis was a big, red-roofed building with a large, columned portico as its entrance and a bas-relief with a charioteer lashing at a team of lions and wolves above. The portico bore a Latin motto Virtutis est domare quaecuncti pavent, which translated as "It is a virtue to subdue those before whom all go in dread."

Isaac Ashdown spent some time locked up in Tugthuis. (PROSE: The Roundheads)
