Ward 26 was one of the more luxurious wards in New New York Hospital. Ambient temperatures were kept at fourteen degrees cohezic, to promote an atmosphere of healing and well-being. Among the patients being treated there were the Duke of Manhattan, who was suffering from Petrifold Regression, with his personal assistant Frau Clovis and his butler at his bedside. The Face of Boe was also there, dying of old age, and spent most of his days sleeping in the care of Novice Hame, who kept him company and maintained his smoke.
Other patients included a red woman recovering from Marconi's Disease with the aid of a cell-washing cascade, and a pale man with Pallidome Pancrosis. Outside the ward was a nearby terminal which served as a secret entrance to the Sisters' Intensive Care unit. Ward 26 also had a security phone which the Tenth Doctor used to call Rose Tyler to inquire on her whereabouts after the two were separated at the hospital lifts. The Doctor and Rose were summoned to the hospital on New Earth by a telepathic message from the Face of Boe requesting their presence in Ward 26. There, the Doctor met several of the Sisters of Plenitude as well as the Duke of Manhattan, who was quickly cured from his terminal condition thanks to "a simple remedy". This aroused the Doctor's suspicions about the miraculous recovery rate from the Sisterhood's methods, and he was later joined in his investigation by Cassandra O'Brien, who had possessed Rose's body.
When the Sisters' infected test-subjects escaped Intensive Care and rampaged throughout the hospital, the survivors - which included Clovis, Hame and the Duke of Manhattan - barricaded themselves in Ward 26, though the Doctor and Cassandra eventually managed to return there through a service door. The Doctor gathered all the ward's intravenous solutions to create a makeshift cure, and used a winch he had taken from the Duke of Manhattan's sickbed to zipline down the lift shaft and mix the medicines with the hospital's disinfectant system.
After the infected were cured and the remaining Sisterhood were arrested by the NNYPD, the Doctor and Cassandra returned to an evacuated Ward 26, where the Face of Boe postponed telling the Doctor his secret before teleporting away. Chip, who had also survived the ordeal, volunteered to serve as Cassandra's final host, reuniting the Doctor with Rose at last. (TV: New Earth)
